workability, maintenance, economy and ease in providing interface with other electronic systems such as CTC. The fail-safe microprocessor system (FSM) was developed as the hardware of the SMILE, as shown in Fig. 9.

Since then, the electronic-interlocking system has expanded nationwide, and made further progress as a heart of a total signalling system.
Fig. 10 shows the Tokyo metropolis zone transport control system, the latest case where the electronic-interlocking was introduced.
